Police Issue Warning After Coyote Sighting

(ONEIDA NATION OF THE THAMES FIRST NATION, ON) – An individual has sustained serious injuries as a result of an attack by dogs.
On April 13, 2024, at approximately 3:45 a.m., members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Middlesex County Detachment and Middlesex-London Paramedic Service were dispatched to an address on Nicholas Road, Oneida Nation of the Thames First Nation for the report of a dog attack.
As a result of injuries sustained, a 32-year-old individual from Oneida Nation of The Thames First Nation was transported to hospital with serious injuries.
Although the investigation is in the early stages, it is believed that both stray dogs and coyotes were part of the attack.
Coyotes can be found anywhere in Ontario, in both rural and urban locations.
If you see a coyote, keep your distance, and appreciate it from afar. The animal will most likely avoid you.
If you encounter an aggressive animal:
Never approach it
Never turn your back and run
Stand tall, make lots of noise and back away from it slowly
If it poses an imminent threat to the public, call 9-1-1
Tips to prevent and manage conflicts with coyotes in our communities:
Don’t put food out to attract wildlife (this makes the animals less fearful of humans over time)
Keep your pets inside at night
Clean up after your dog – coyotes are attracted to dog feces
Install a fence on your property, ensuring it extends at least 20 centimeters underground
Garbage should be stored in sealed containers or put out the morning of collection
